Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drone) Standards

What are the Benefits of Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drone) Standards?

As implementation of unmanned aerial systems (drones) initiatives continues to expand, a tipping point will eventually be reached at which there are more aircraft in the sky operating without pilots than with them.

Unmanned Aerial System Standards are essential in providing clarity and consistency in the rapidly evolving domain of unmanned aircraft.

They set the benchmark for safety, performance, and flight proficiency, ensuring that drone operators and manufacturers adhere to a consistent set of criteria.

These standards encompass a range of topics from the operation to the construction of unmanned aerial systems, ensuring a unified approach towards the safety and efficiency of these systems.

The F38 Committee, under ASTM International, is responsible for the development and evolution of the unmanned aerial systems standards.

Ensuring Safe Drone Operation Globally

Emerging technologies introduce new dynamics and challenges. Standards ensure that as these technologies integrate into society, they do so safely and efficiently. Especially with innovations like electric aircraft, standards act as a guiding tool for safe and effective integration.

Drones are poised to reshape various industries in the coming decade. From agriculture, where they can monitor crops, to logistics, where they can facilitate faster deliveries, the potential applications are vast. Moreover, with advancements in AI and machine learning, drones will become more autonomous and efficient.

As these systems become more integrated into our daily lives and business operations, the need for comprehensive and universally accepted standards becomes paramount. Unmanned aerial systems Standards standards are designed to address this very need.

From the design and manufacturing processes to flight operations and safety protocols, unmanned aerial systems standards ensure that there’s a consistent approach to the development, deployment, and operation of drones across the globe.

Drone Advisory Services

Bridging the gap between research and development and sustained commercial success by harnessing standards to optimum effect can be complex and challenging for those working in technologies like emerging airspace. Events move quickly, and established processes don’t always apply.

For this reason, we offer advisory services to organizations to help them make rapid and effective progress. The four areas we cover are:

1. Technical and strategic consulting on new developments and trends.

2. Roadmapping (often aligning technology and standards roadmaps).

3. Product development workshops and liaison.

4. Bespoke analysis and technical reports – often impacting investment or M&A decisions.

ASTM Committee on Drone Standards

ASTM committees are developing standards and training across the Unmanned Aerial Systems Standards sector – from electronic license plates for drones to performance-based standards for electric propulsion and automated flight control systems.

They are also building links between different parts of the ecosystem, bringing together regulators, research, and industry leaders working on unmanned aircraft systems, urban air mobility, and autonomous flight systems.

By taking this collaborative approach and leveraging expertise across emerging technologies, ASTM is leading the way in creating the operational, infrastructure, and standards frameworks that are critical to safety and success for a new era of air travel. Committee F38 meets twice a year, usually in May and November, with approximately 50 members attending three days of technical meetings. The Committee currently has jurisdiction of 14 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 15.09.
